If Patrick Kane is going to join a team mid season (Oilers or otherwise), would it not make sense for a team to sign him right after the start of the season? If you sign a player to a contact while he's injured, do you still get the cap relief?
If so, Kane could help his potential new team by signing early, giving them additional wiggle room in their roster before he's fit to play.
