Oilers Beat Avalanche?
Michael-John KozakOctober 20, 2003

A team that just two games ago wondered if they could ever score. Saturday night, the Oilers go out as underdogs and beat the Avalance 6-3 in front of an excited home crowd.

Torres Smyth Hemsky Brewer Cross
Chimera Reasoner Dvorak Smith Staios
Moreau York Pisani Semenov Ferguson
Isbister Horcoff Laraque
    Salo
    Conklin
Scratched: Stoll and Bergeron are healthy scratches.

Steve Staios lead the way tonight with two goals for the first time in his career. The two goals capped off a three point effort from the normally steady defenseman. Saturday night was the first time Steve Staios had notched a pair of goals in an NHL game.

The Oilers penalty killing went only 50% tonight. All 3 Colorado goals were scored on the power play; little wonder with a team that boasts 6 premier forwards in what looks more like an all-star team than a regular team in a 30 team league. On the flipside though, the Oilers were very dangerous short-handed and scored twice being a man down. Mike York and Marty Reasoner both notched a shorthanded goal a piece.

Teams win that have successful special teams. With the Oilers allowing 3 yet scoring two while on the penalty kill against an offensive dynamo, some amount of success comes out of the game. The power play for the Oilers got credit for 2 goals. Cory Cross and Steve Staios both had a power play goal each. The Oilers defensemen got credit for half of the goals tonight as the Oilers show their depth at scoring goals against Colorado.

Steve Staios' regular stength goal within the first minute of the third period would prove to be the eventual game winner. Staios' goal made it 4-2 and while Alex Tanguay's 4-3 goal made it close minutes later, Marty Reasoner put the puck past Bill Sauve off Salo's pass to Ryan Smyth coming out of the penalty box. Smyth's pass to Reasoner was perfect and Sauve was handcuffed on the play to make it 5-3.

Ryan Smyth would score the empty net goal with less than 90 seconds left in the game to seal the deal.

Steve Staios - career night with 2 goals and an assist.
Tommy Salo - 31 saves for the Oilers win.
Marty Reasoner - strong penalty killing with a goal and an assist.

The Mike Comrie rumors continue to circle. The latest? The Oilers would be interested departing with Comrie for Florida's top-notch prospect, Stephen Weiss. With the Oilers winning 2 in a row and topping a Western Conference favorite in Colorado, the need to move Comrie swings back to Kevin Lowe's favor. Patience may be key to getting proper return for Mike Comrie if no deal can be reached for him to play in Edmonton once again.

Alexei Semenov played in his first game of the season. He played only 11:10, just one second more than Scott Ferguson. As a bottom pairing, the two did what they need to do. Semenov certainly has a higher ceiling than a 5th defenseman, but the Oilers organization have chosen to take it slower with the young defenseman.

Tuesday night, the Oilers finish off a 3 game homestand and look to remain undefeated at home this season. The St. Louis Blues will be in town and the game starts at 7:00 on SportsNet-West.
